-(으)ㄴ/는 대신에

instead of; but in return

Two meanings that look alike on the page. One swaps one thing for another; the other says a drawback is offset by an advantage.

    stemending

    When to use it

The form follows the modifier system: verbs take -는 대신에, adjectives -(으)ㄴ 대신에, nouns just 대신에. Stems in ㄹ drop it. The 에 is optional.

With an action verb it means substitution: 택시를 타는 대신에 걸어갔어요 — walking replaced the taxi.

With an adjective, or where no swap is possible, it means compensation: 이 집은 비싼 대신에 위치가 좋아요 — expensive, but the location makes up for it. English needs two different constructions here; Korean uses one.

The compensating sense is close to -지만, but 대신에 frames the second point as a fair exchange rather than a simple contrast.

    In use

    1. 택시를 타는 대신에 걸어갔어요.

I walked instead of taking a taxi.

    2. 이 집은 비싼 대신에 위치가 아주 좋아요.

This place is expensive, but the location makes up for it.

    3. 커피 대신에 차를 마셨어요.

I had tea instead of coffee.

    4. 집에서 만드는 대신에 시간이 좀 걸려요.

Making it at home saves money, but it does take time.

    5. 일이 힘든 대신에 월급이 많아요.

The work is hard, but the pay is good in return.

    6. 제가 도와드리는 대신에 부탁 하나만 들어주세요.

I’ll help you, but in return please do one thing for me.

    Compared with

    • -지 말고

-지 말고 asks someone to choose the alternative; -는 대신에 reports the swap or proposes it neutrally.

택시 타지 말고 걸어요. (let’s walk instead)  /  택시를 타는 대신에 걸었어요. (I walked instead)

    • -지만

-지만 states a bare contrast; 대신에 presents the second point as compensation for the first. The trade-off is the whole point.

비싸지만 좋아요. (expensive but good)  /  비싼 대신에 좋아요. (expensive, but you get quality for it)

    • -(으)ㄴ/는 반면에

반면에 sets two facts against each other with no sense of exchange. 대신에 implies one makes up for the other.

비싼 대신에 좋아요. (worth the price)  /  비싼 반면에 품질은 보통이에요. (expensive, whereas quality is average)

    Watch out

    • 집에서 만들는 대신에 시간이 걸려요.

      집에서 만드는 대신에 시간이 걸려요.

Stems ending in ㄹ drop it before -는, as everywhere in the modifier system.

    • 이 집은 비싸는 대신에 위치가 좋아요.

이 집은 비싼 대신에 위치가 좋아요.

비싸다 is an adjective, so it takes -(으)ㄴ. -는 belongs to verbs.

    • 커피를 대신에 차를 마셨어요.

      커피 대신에 차를 마셨어요.

After a bare noun, 대신에 follows directly with no particle in between.
