춥다 vs 차갑다 vs 시원하다

English says “cold” for both the weather and the water; Korean splits them. 춥다 is cold air you feel, 차갑다 is a cold thing you touch, and 시원하다 is a coolness that feels good.

How they differ
1. Cold air vs cold things. 날씨가 추워요 ○ / 날씨가 차가워요 ✕. 물이 차가워요 ○ / 물이 추워요 ✕. Wind is touched by your skin, so 바람이 차가워요 is fine.
2. 시원하다 is always positive. 시원하다 means the coolness feels good: 바람이 시원해요, 시원한 맥주. When it’s too cold, switch to 춥다 or 차갑다. It’s not a milder “cold”.
3. 시원하다 beyond temperature. Koreans call hot soup 시원하다 when the broth is clean and refreshing: 국물이 시원해요. It also means relief: 속이 시원해요 (what a relief).
4. Cold people are 차갑다. Like English, a cold personality uses the touch word: 성격이 차가워요 ○ / 성격이 추워요 ✕.

The hot side works the same way: 덥다 (hot air), 뜨겁다 (hot to the touch), 따뜻하다 (pleasantly warm). “It got cold” is -아/어지다: 날씨가 추워졌어요.
