잊어버리다 vs 잃어버리다

잊어버리다 (forget) and 잃어버리다 (lose) sound almost the same, so learners mix them up. Forget = it leaves your head; lose = it leaves your hands.

How they differ

1. Memory vs possession. 이름을 잊어버렸어요 (I forgot the name) ○ / 이름을 잃어버렸어요 ✕. 지갑을 잃어버렸어요 (I lost my wallet) ○ / 지갑을 잊어버렸어요 ✕.

2. The sounds: 잊 vs 잃. 잊어 is pronounced [이저], 잃어 is [이러] — the ㅎ drops, leaving a ㄹ sound. Listen for ㅈ (forget) vs ㄹ (lose).

3. English trap: “I forgot my umbrella on the bus.” That English means you left it behind. Korean says 버스에 우산을 두고 내렸어요 ○ / 버스에서 우산을 잊어버렸어요 ✕. If it’s gone for good: 잃어버렸어요. (Forgetting to bring it is 우산 가져오는 걸 깜빡했어요.)

4. Getting lost is 길을 잃어버리다. 길을 잃어버렸어요 (I got lost) ○ / 길을 잊어버렸어요 △ (sounds like you forgot the route). A child separated from a parent: 엄마를 잃어버렸어요.

  1. 약속 시간을 잊어버려서 친구가 한 시간이나 기다렸어요.

    I forgot the meeting time, so my friend waited a whole hour.

  2. 여행 중에 여권을 잃어버려서 정말 힘들었어요.

    I lost my passport during the trip, and it was a real ordeal.

  3. 한국어 단어를 외워도 금방 잊어버려요.

    Even when I memorize Korean words, I forget them right away.

One step further

The 버리다 ending adds a sense of completion or regret; see -아/어 버리다. For “forgot to do”, use -는 것을 잊어버리다; for a past experience, -(으)ㄴ 적이 있다.

Common mistakes

  • 버스에서 우산을 잊어버렸어요.

    버스에서 우산을 두고 내렸어요.

    “I forgot my umbrella on the bus” means you left it behind: say 두고 내리다 (or 잃어버리다 if it’s gone); 잊어버리다 is about memory.

  • 그 사람 이름을 잃어버렸어요.

    그 사람 이름을 잊어버렸어요.

    A name leaves your memory — that’s 잊어버리다; 잃어버리다 is losing a physical thing.

  • 공원에서 강아지를 잊어버렸어요.

    공원에서 강아지를 잃어버렸어요.

    A pet that went missing is lost (잃어버리다), not forgotten.
