When to use it
Attachment is the standard rule with the ㄹ short form, and 대로 is a noun taking a space. The distinctive part is what follows: the same verb again.
The pattern is 지칠 대로 지치다 — exhausted to the very limit of exhaustion. The repetition is what carries the intensity.
The state described is nearly always unwelcome: 지치다, 상하다, 늙다, 굳다, 망가지다. Something has gone as far as it can, and not in a good direction.
Two set phrases stand slightly apart: 될 대로 되다 (let it go however it will) and 갈 대로 가다 (things have gone too far).

Same noun, different construction. -는 대로 means “in accordance with” and takes no repetition; -(으)ㄹ 대로 doubles the verb to mark an extreme.

-다 못해
-다 못해 says a quality tipped over into another; -(으)ㄹ 대로 says it went as far as it could within itself.
하얗다 못해 푸르렀다. (white into blue) / 굳을 대로 굳었다. (hard as it gets)

지경이다 says you are on the brink; -(으)ㄹ 대로 says the limit has been reached and passed.

The construction requires the same verb on both sides. A different one breaks the pattern.

The pattern marks a state that has deteriorated to its limit. For something good, a positive intensifier fits.
