    stemending

    When to use it

Attachment is the standard rule with the ㄹ short form: 만들다 gives 만들 것이다. 것 is a noun, so it takes a space.

The register scale runs: -(으)ㄹ 거예요 in conversation, -(으)ㄹ 겁니다 in formal speech, -(으)ㄹ 것입니다 in careful formal speech, and -(으)ㄹ 것이다 in writing that addresses no listener.

The meaning splits by subject exactly as with 거예요. First person gives intention; third person gives prediction. In news writing the prediction sense dominates: 내일부터 기온이 떨어질 것이다.

For something already finished, the past goes inside: -았/었을 것이다.

    Compared with

    • -(으)ㄹ 거예요

Identical grammar, different register. Choosing between them is a question of where the sentence appears, not what it means.

      갈 거예요. (speech)  /  갈 것이다. (writing)

    • -겠-

Both appear in formal contexts, but -겠습니다 announces the speaker’s own resolve while -(으)ㄹ 것입니다 states a plan or forecast.

최선을 다하겠습니다. (I pledge to)  /  계속 노력할 것입니다. (we will continue to)

    • -(으)ㄹ 것 같다

Same modifier, different closing. 것이다 asserts; 것 같다 hedges. News writing uses the first, conversation leans on the second.

비가 올 것이다. (it will rain)  /  비가 올 것 같아요. (I think it’ll rain)

    Watch out

    • 새 제품을 만들을 것이다.

      새 제품을 만들 것이다.

A stem ending in ㄹ already supplies it, as with 만들 거예요 and 만들 수 있다.

    • 친구한테 내일 갈 것이다.

      친구한테 내일 갈 거예요.

-것이다 addresses no listener. Speaking to someone, use 거예요 or 겁니다.

    • 그는 이미 들을 것이다. — meaning “he must have heard”

      그는 이미 들었을 것이다.

A conjecture about something already finished puts the past inside: -았/었을 것이다.
