When to use it

Attachment is the standard rule with the ㄹ short form: 만들다 gives 만들 리가 없다. 리 is a noun, so it takes a space, and the 가 may be dropped.

It is about likelihood, not ability. 그 사람이 거짓말할 리가 없어요 says you refuse to believe he would lie, not that he is incapable of it.

For something already finished, the past goes inside: 벌써 도착했을 리가 없어요.

The positive 리가 있다 exists but only as a rhetorical question: 그럴 리가 있나요? — which still means no.

In use

1. 그 사람이 거짓말을 할 리가 없어요.

   There’s no way he would lie.

2. 지금 출발했으니까 벌써 도착했을 리가 없어요.

   He only just left, so there’s no way he’s arrived already.

3. 이렇게 쉬운 문제를 틀릴 리가 없어요.

   There’s no way she’d get such an easy question wrong.

4. 그 가격에 이런 품질일 리가 없어요.

   There’s no way the quality is this good at that price.

5. 어머니가 그걸 직접 만들 리가 없어요.

   There’s no chance my mother made that herself.

6. 그럴 리가요.

   Surely not.

Compared with

• -(으)ㄹ 수 없다

  수 없다 denies ability; 리가 없다 denies likelihood. The person may be perfectly able and still, in your view, never do it.

  거짓말을 할 수 없어요. (he’s unable to)  /  거짓말을 할 리가 없어요. (he wouldn’t)

• -(으)ㄹ 것 같다

  것 같다 hedges gently; 리가 없다 slams the door. The two sit at opposite ends of the confidence scale.

  안 올 것 같아요. (I don’t think he’ll come)  /  올 리가 없어요. (there’s no way he’ll come)

• -(으)ㄹ 리가 있나요?

  The positive form works only as a rhetorical question, and the answer is always no. Common as the short 그럴 리가요.

  그럴 리가 없어요.  /  그럴 리가 있나요?

Watch out

• 어머니가 그걸 만들을 리가 없어요.

  어머니가 그걸 만들 리가 없어요.

  A stem ending in ㄹ already supplies it, as with 만들 거예요 and 만들 뿐이에요.

• 벌써 도착할 리가 없어요. — meaning “he can’t have arrived”

  벌써 도착했을 리가 없어요.

  For something already finished, the past goes inside the ending.

• 저는 한국어를 할 리가 없어요.

  저는 한국어를 할 수 없어요.

  리가 없다 rejects a possibility on principle. To say you are unable, the phrase is 수 없다.
