-(으)ㄴ/는 법이다

that’s how it is; naturally

States a general truth as though it were a rule of the world. 법 means law — not a statute here, but the way things reliably go.

Build it

Pick a word

    지나가+-(으)ㄴ/는 법이다

    stemending

    When to use it

The form follows the modifier system: verbs take -는 법이다, adjectives -(으)ㄴ 법이다. Stems in ㄹ drop it, and 법 takes a space.

It asserts a general principle, not a particular fact. 시간이 지나면 잊히는 법이다 claims something about how life works, and the tone is that of a proverb or a piece of advice.

Because of that, it cannot report a single event. 어제 비가 온 법이다 is not merely odd — it is ungrammatical.

Its near-twin is -기 마련이다. The difference is slight: 법이다 sounds like a stated rule, 마련이다 like an inevitable tendency.

    In use

    1. 아무리 힘든 일도 시간이 지나면 지나가는 법이다.

However hard things are, they pass in time — that’s how it goes.

    2. 노력하면 언젠가는 결실을 맺는 법입니다.

If you work at it, it will bear fruit eventually.

    3. 처음에는 누구나 서툰 법이에요.

Everyone is clumsy at first — it’s only natural.

    4. 급하게 서두르면 실수하는 법이다.

Rush things and you’ll make mistakes.

    5. 사람의 마음은 쉽게 변하지 않는 법이에요.

People’s feelings don’t change easily, as a rule.

    6. 직접 만들면 애착이 생기는 법이지요.

When you make something yourself, you grow attached to it.

    Compared with

    • -기 마련이다

Very close. 법이다 frames the claim as a rule; 마련이다 frames it as an inevitability. Most speakers use them interchangeably.

실수하는 법이다. (that’s the rule)  /  실수하기 마련이다. (it’s bound to happen)

    • -(으)ㄴ/는 것 같다

것 같다 hedges an individual impression; 법이다 asserts a universal. Opposite ends of the confidence scale.

힘든 것 같아요. (I think it’s hard)  /  처음엔 힘든 법이에요. (it’s always hard at first)

    • -는 것이다

-는 것이다 explains or emphasises a particular point; 법이다 generalises beyond the case at hand.

그래서 늦은 것이다. (that’s why he was late)  /  서두르면 늦는 법이다. (rushing makes you late)

    Watch out

    • 어제 비가 온 법이다.

      어제 비가 왔다.

법이다 states a general rule. A single past event takes the plain past.

    • 처음에는 누구나 서툰 법이 있어요.

      처음에는 누구나 서툰 법이에요.

The construction ends in 이다, not 있다. 법이 있다 would mean a law exists.

    • 일이 힘들는 법이다.

      일이 힘든 법이다.

힘들다 is an adjective and its ㄹ drops before -(으)ㄴ.
