-(으)ㄴ/는 듯하다
appear to, seem to
The written cousin of 것 같다. Same grammar, same meaning — but it belongs to reports, articles, and considered prose.

When to use it
The form follows the modifier system exactly as 것 같다 does: verbs take -는 듯하다, adjectives -(으)ㄴ 듯하다, completed actions -(으)ㄴ 듯하다, and things ahead -(으)ㄹ 듯하다. Stems in ㄹ drop it.
The difference from 것 같다 is register alone. 듯하다 sounds measured and slightly literary, which makes it common in news writing and formal reports: 시장이 회복되는 듯하다.
Unlike 모양이다 and 나 보다, it can be used about yourself, just as 것 같다 can.
Watch for the related -듯이, which means “as if” and is a different construction: 아는 듯이 말했어요.
How to attach it
| Word type | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb, present | -는 듯하다 | 오다 → 오는 듯하다 |
| Verb, completed | -(으)ㄴ 듯하다 | 가다 → 간 듯하다 |
| Adjective | -(으)ㄴ 듯하다 | 좋다 → 좋은 듯하다 |
| Still ahead | -(으)ㄹ 듯하다 | 올 듯하다 |
| Ends in ㄹ | ㄹ drops | 만들다 → 만드는 듯하다 |
| Different word | -듯이 = as if | 아는 듯이 말했어요 |

Compared with
-(으)ㄴ/는 것 같다
Identical grammar, different register. 것 같다 is what you say; 듯하다 is what you write. Using 듯하다 in casual chat sounds bookish.
비가 오는 것 같아요. (speech) / 비가 오는 듯하다. (writing)
-(으)ㄴ/는 모양이다
모양이다 requires external evidence and cannot describe you. 듯하다 has neither restriction, which makes it the more flexible of the two.
제가 실수한 듯합니다. (about me) / 제가 실수한 모양이에요. (wrong)
-듯이
A separate construction meaning “as if.” It modifies how something is done rather than hedging a claim.
아는 듯하다. (seems to know) / 아는 듯이 말했다. (spoke as if he knew)
Watch out
이번 결정은 성급하는 듯합니다.
이번 결정은 성급한 듯합니다.
성급하다 is an adjective, so it takes -(으)ㄴ. -는 belongs to verbs.
직접 만들는 듯한 맛이 났어요.
직접 만드는 듯한 맛이 났어요.
Stems ending in ㄹ drop it before -는, as everywhere in the modifier system.
야, 비가 오는 듯해.
야, 비가 오는 것 같아.
듯하다 belongs to writing and formal speech. Among friends it sounds oddly literary.
