-(으)ㄴ/는 둥 마는 둥

half-heartedly, barely bothering

The action happened, but only just. The paired 둥 sets doing against not doing and leaves the result somewhere in between.

Build it

Pick a verb

    +-는 둥 마는 둥

    stemending

    When to use it

Attach -는 to a verb stem, then 둥 마는 둥, normally followed by 하다. Stems in ㄹ drop it: 만들다 gives 만드는 둥 마는 둥.

The pairing is fixed — the same verb, then 말다, each with 둥. You cannot use one half alone.

The judgement is always critical: the person did the thing carelessly, distractedly, or without commitment. 밥을 먹는 둥 마는 둥 하고 나갔어요.

A small set of verbs carries most of the usage: 먹다, 듣다, 보다, 자다, 대답하다 — ordinary daily actions done badly.

    Compared with

    • -다시피 하다

-다시피 하다 says something was practically done; -는 둥 마는 둥 says it was done, but hardly worth counting.

뛰다시피 했어요. (practically ran)  /  먹는 둥 마는 둥 했어요. (barely ate)

    • -(으)ㄹ까 말까 하다

Similar shape with 말다, opposite timing. -(으)ㄹ까 말까 hesitates before acting; -는 둥 마는 둥 describes the half-hearted act itself.

먹을까 말까 했어요. (couldn’t decide)  /  먹는 둥 마는 둥 했어요. (barely ate)

    • 대충

The adverb 대충 also means “roughly,” but can be neutral or even practical. -는 둥 마는 둥 is always a complaint.

대충 먹었어요. (ate quickly)  /  먹는 둥 마는 둥 했어요. (barely ate at all)

    Watch out

    • 급하게 만들는 둥 마는 둥 했어요.

급하게 만드는 둥 마는 둥 했어요.

Stems ending in ㄹ drop it before -는, as everywhere in the modifier system.

    • 아침을 먹는 둥 하고 나갔어요.

아침을 먹는 둥 마는 둥 하고 나갔어요.

The pairing is fixed. Without 마는 둥 the expression is incomplete.

    • 일이 바쁜 둥 마는 둥 했어요.

일을 하는 둥 마는 둥 했어요.

The construction takes action verbs. An adjective cannot be done half-heartedly.
