TOPIK I · Level 1

-(이)라고 하다

be called, be named

Introduces a name or a term. The form you use to say what something is called, and the first step into the wider system of reported speech.

Build it

Pick a noun

    김치+-(이)라고 해요

    nounending

    When to use it

A noun ending in a consonant takes -이라고: 김밥이라고 해요. A noun ending in a vowel takes -라고: 김치라고 해요. The same rule you already know from 이에요 / 예요.

Its everyday job is naming: 제 이름은 마이클이라고 합니다 in an introduction, or explaining an unfamiliar word: 이 음식을 한국어로 뭐라고 해요?

Structurally it is the noun branch of Korean’s reported speech. Statements use -(느)ㄴ다고 하다, questions -(으)냐고 하다, and so on — a system you will meet properly at level 2. Learning this one first makes the rest easier to slot in.

    Compared with

    • 이에요 / 예요

이에요 identifies; -(이)라고 하다 names. Introducing yourself with 라고 합니다 is a shade more formal and modest than 입니다.

저는 마이클이에요. (I’m Michael)  /  마이클이라고 합니다. (I go by Michael)

    • -(이)라고 부르다

하다 states what something is called in general; 부르다 says who does the calling. Use 부르다 when the caller matters.

이걸 김밥이라고 해요.  /  친구들은 저를 마이크라고 불러요.

    • -(느)ㄴ다고 하다

The verb branch of the same system, for reporting what someone said. -(이)라고 하다 handles nouns; -(느)ㄴ다고 하다 handles sentences.

김치라고 해요. (it’s called kimchi)  /  간다고 해요. (he says he’s going)

    Watch out

    • 이건 김밥라고 해요.

      이건 김밥이라고 해요.

김밥 ends in a consonant, so it takes 이라고. The rule matches 이에요 / 예요.

    • 제 이름은 마이클라고 합니다.

      제 이름은 마이클이라고 합니다.

마이클 ends in ㄹ, which is a consonant here, so 이라고 applies.

    • 이 음식이 뭐라고 해요?

      이 음식을 뭐라고 해요?

The thing being named is the object of 하다, so it takes 을/를 rather than 이/가.
