-(으)ㄴ/는 대로

just as; as soon as — after a clause

The clause-level use of 대로. Which modifier you choose decides between two quite different meanings, so the tense is doing real work here.

    When to use it

With -(으)ㄴ 대로 the action is finished and serves as the model: 제가 말한 대로 하세요 (do as I said). With -는 대로 in the manner sense, the model is ongoing or general: 보는 대로 말해 주세요.

But -는 대로 has a second life. Attached to something not yet done, it means “as soon as”: 도착하는 대로 연락드리겠습니다. Context separates the two readings cleanly — a future action gives the temporal meaning, a present or habitual one gives manner.

This temporal use belongs to arrangements and promises. Compare -자마자, which works freely with past events and stresses that no time passed at all.

Stems ending in ㄹ drop it: 만들다 gives 만드는 대로. And 대로 is a separate word after a modifier, so it takes a space.

    In use

    1. 제가 말한 대로 해 주세요.

Please do it the way I said.

    2. 배운 대로 다시 한번 해 보세요.

Try it again the way you were taught.

    3. 본 대로 솔직하게 이야기했어요.

I told it honestly, just as I saw it.

    4. 회의가 끝나는 대로 전화드리겠습니다.

I’ll call you as soon as the meeting ends.

    5. 저녁이 만들어지는 대로 부를게요.

I’ll call you as soon as dinner is ready.

    6. 생각나는 대로 편하게 말씀해 주세요.

Please just say whatever comes to mind.

    Compared with

    • Noun + 대로

With a bare noun, 대로 joins directly and needs no modifier: 약속대로, 계획대로. The clause version is what this entry covers.

약속대로 왔어요.  /  약속한 대로 왔어요.

    • -자마자

In the temporal sense both mean “as soon as,” but -는 대로 points forward and suits commitments. -자마자 reports past events comfortably and stresses immediacy.

끝나는 대로 연락할게요. (I’ll call when it ends)  /  끝나자마자 연락했어요. (I called the instant it ended)

    • 처럼

처럼 draws a resemblance; 대로 follows an instruction or a model. Imitation versus compliance.

가수처럼 노래해요. (like a singer)  /  배운 대로 노래해요. (as taught)

    Watch out

    • 어제 제가 말하는 대로 했어요.

      어제 제가 말한 대로 했어요.

The instruction was already given, so the modifier is past. -는 대로 would describe an ongoing or general model.

    • 회의가 끝난 대로 전화드리겠습니다.

      회의가 끝나는 대로 전화드리겠습니다.

The “as soon as” reading needs -는, even though the action lies in the future. -(으)ㄴ 대로 would mean “in the manner it ended.”

    • 저녁을 만들는 대로 부를게요.

      저녁을 만드는 대로 부를게요.

Stems ending in ㄹ drop it before -는, as everywhere in the modifier system.
