sometimes do; also be

Adds one more thing to the picture. With verbs it means “sometimes”; with adjectives it means “and also.” Built on -기 plus .

    +-기도 하다

    stemending

    When to use it

Attach -기도 하다 to any stem. Nothing changes, ㄹ stays, and the tense goes on 하다.

With an action verb it means the action happens occasionally, alongside whatever else: 가끔 혼자 영화를 보기도 해요. The 도 is doing its usual job — adding this to a list.

With an adjective it adds a second quality: 그 일은 힘들기도 하고 재미있기도 해요. The paired form -기도 하고 -기도 하다 is very common.

It differs from -기는 하다, which concedes rather than adds: 가기는 해요 means “I do go, but…”

    Compared with

    • 도 adds a noun to a list; -기도 하다 adds a whole action or quality. Same idea, different scope.

저도 가요. (I go too)  /  가기도 해요. (I sometimes go as well)

    • -기는 하다

-기도 하다 adds; -기는 하다 concedes. The second usually sets up a “but.”

가기도 해요. (I do go sometimes)  /  가기는 해요. 그런데 자주는 아니에요. (I do go, but not often)

    • 가끔

The adverb states frequency directly. -기도 하다 implies occasional occurrence without naming a rate, and the two combine happily.

가끔 봐요. (I watch occasionally)  /  가끔 보기도 해요. (sometimes I even watch)

    Watch out

    • 어릴 때는 시골에서 살았기도 했어요.

      어릴 때는 시골에서 살기도 했어요.

-기 never carries tense. The past goes on 하다 at the end.

    • 그 사람은 가수기도 하고 배우기도 해요.

그 사람은 가수이기도 하고 배우이기도 해요.

A noun needs the copula 이다 before -기도 하다, giving 이기도.

    • 저는 매일 운동하기도 해요.

      저는 매일 운동해요.

-기도 하다 marks something as occasional or additional. With 매일 it contradicts itself.
