as if, as though
Describes how something is done by comparing it to something else. Shares its 듯 with -(으)ㄴ/는 듯하다, but modifies an action rather than hedging a claim.

When to use it
The form follows the modifier system: verbs take -는 듯이, adjectives and completed actions -(으)ㄴ 듯이. Stems in ㄹ drop it. The 이 may be dropped: 아는 듯 말했다.
It modifies the manner of the following verb: 그는 모든 걸 아는 듯이 말했다 — he spoke as though he knew everything. The comparison is usually not true.
A bare-stem form -듯이 appears in fixed similes and proverbs: 물 쓰듯이 (like water), 밥 먹듯이 (as routinely as eating), 불 보듯 뻔하다.
Keep the two 듯 constructions apart: 듯이 says how something was done, 듯하다 says something appears to be the case.

Nearly the same meaning, and more common in speech. 듯이 is a shade more literary.

-다시피 appeals to knowledge the listener actually has; 듯이 draws a comparison that is usually untrue.
