How they differ

1. “How have you been?” is 지내다. 잘 지냈어요? ○ / 잘 살았어요? △. English “How are you living?” doesn’t exist, but learners stretch “live” and pick 살다. 잘 살다 usually means living well-off or living a good life: 잘 사는 나라 (a rich country).

2. Where you live is 살다. 서울에 살아요 (I live in Seoul) ○. 서울에서 지내요 ○ but only means “I’m staying in Seoul (for now)”. For your home address, use 살다.

3. Relationships and holidays use 지내다. 친하게 지내다 (be close), 사이좋게 지내다 (get along): 친구랑 친하게 살아요 ✕. Holidays and ceremonies: 추석을 잘 지냈어요 (I had a good Chuseok), 제사를 지내다 (hold ancestral rites).
