부터

from — a starting point in time or sequence

Marks where something begins. Korean splits English “from” in two: 부터 handles time and order, 에서 handles places.

    When to use it

부터 says “starting here.” Most often that is a time: 아홉 시부터 일해요. It pairs naturally with 까지 to bound a stretch: 월요일부터 금요일까지.

It also marks the first item in an order of doing things, where English says “starting with”: 저부터 시작할게요 (I’ll go first), 숙제부터 하세요 (do the homework first). This use is common and rarely taught early.

The line to hold is against 에서. A place you travelled from takes 에서, not 부터. You can attach both for emphasis — 집에서부터 걸었어요 — but 부터 alone on a place is wrong.

    In use

      Class starts at nine.

I work from Monday to Friday.

I plan to start exercising from tomorrow.

      I’ll speak first.

Do your homework first, then play.

Please explain it again from the beginning.

    Compared with

Both are “from.” 에서 takes places, 부터 takes times and sequences. Getting this backwards is the standard beginner error.

(came from Seoul)  /  세 시부터 기다렸어요. (waited from three)

The closing bracket. 부터 opens a span and 까지 closes it. For places the pair becomes 에서 …

A formal written variant meaning “from,” used for sources of information and origins. It appears in news and reports, rarely in speech.

    Watch out

Places open a span with 에서, not 부터. Only the closing 까지 is shared between time and place.

부터 already carries the time reference, so 에 is not added. Keep 에 for a single point in time.

부터 marks the moment something starts, not how long it lasts. For a length of time use 동안.
