How they differ

1. 찾다 is both “look for” and “find”. 열쇠를 찾고 있어요 (I’m looking for my keys) and 열쇠를 찾았어요 (I found my keys). It also means looking something up, 사전에서 찾아보세요, and withdrawing cash: 돈을 찾다. English speakers often miss that last one.

2. Jobs, rooms, staff: 구하다. 일자리를 구하다 (look for / find a job), 집을 구하다 (find a place to live), 직원을 구합니다 (Staff wanted). 찾다 is also heard here (일자리를 찾고 있어요 ○), but 구하다 is the standard word for trying to secure one. Hard-to-get items too: 표를 구하기 어려워요.

3. Rescue is only 구하다. 아이를 구했어요 (saved the child) ○ / 아이를 찾았어요 = found the child, not saved them. The noun is 구조 (rescue).

One step further

찾다 combines with -아/어 보다 as 찾아보다 (look up, check) and with 오다/가다 as 찾아오다/찾아가다 (come/go to see someone). For the hard-to-get nuance of 구하다, pair it with -(으)ㄹ 수 있다: 표를 구할 수 있을까요? (Do you think we can get tickets?)
