WordCore meaningNuanceTypical pattern
드디어finally, at long lastLong-awaited, usually welcome. Common in speech, often with excitement. Also for an event now close: 드디어 내일이다.드디어 -았/었다!
드디어 내일이다
결국in the end, eventually, ultimatelyThe final outcome, good or bad; very often a result you didn’t want.
마침내at last, finallyWritten, formal. The culmination of a long effort or process; common in news and stories.(오랜 노력) 끝에 마침내

How they differ

1. Waited-for vs how it turned out. (I finally passed!) is joy after waiting. 결국 떨어졌어요 (in the end I failed) just reports the outcome.

2. 결국 with negatives and giving in. 결국 fits results of hesitation or giving in: 고민하다가 결국 안 샀어요 (after thinking it over, I ended up not buying it), 결국 참지 못했어요 (I couldn’t hold back in the end). 드디어 doesn’t combine with 안/못 like this. It also pairs with -고 말다: 결국 울고 말았어요.

3. 마침내 is the written “at last”. 마침내 marks the climax of a long process and sounds like news or a novel: 오랜 협상 끝에 마침내 합의했다 (after long talks, they at last agreed). In casual speech, say △.

4. 결국 also means “ultimately”. 결국 can sum up a conclusion, not only a result in time: 결국 같은 말이에요 (it’s ultimately the same thing). 드디어 and 마침내 can’t do this. English speakers who map every “finally” to 드디어 should check: was it hoped for?
