Confusing Words · TOPIK I
좋다 vs 좋아하다
good, nice; (something) is liked · to like
좋다 is an adjective: the thing you like is the subject and takes 이/가. 좋아하다 is a verb, just like English “like”: the thing you like is the object and takes 을/를.
At a glance
| Word | Core meaning | Nuance | Typical pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| 좋다 | to be good / nice; to be liked | Adjective. N이/가 좋다. Speaker’s own feeling, or a general evaluation (날씨가 좋다). | N이/가 좋다 날씨가 좋다 |
| 좋아하다 | to like | Verb. N을/를 좋아하다. Works for anyone, including third persons. | N을/를 좋아하다 -는 것을 좋아하다 |
How they differ
1. Match the particle to the word. Both mean “I like kimchi”: 저는 김치가 좋아요 ○ / 저는 김치를 좋아해요 ○. Mixing them is the classic error: 김치를 좋아요 ✕ / 김치가 좋아해요 ✕.
2. Other people’s likes → 좋아하다. 좋다 reports the speaker’s own feeling, like 싫다 or 덥다. For someone else, use the -아/어하다 verb: 동생은 축구를 좋아해요 ○ / 동생은 축구가 좋아요 ✕.
3. 좋다 also just means “good”. 날씨가 좋아요 (the weather is nice), 이 가방은 좋아요 (this bag is good). 좋아하다 never means “good”: 날씨가 좋아해요 ✕.
4. Subtle difference in feel. 김치가 좋아요 sounds like a feeling in the moment or a warm statement; 김치를 좋아해요 sounds like a fact about your taste. Both are everyday Korean.

저는 고양이가 좋아해요.
저는 고양이를 좋아해요.
좋아하다 is a verb and takes 을/를; only 좋다 takes 이/가 (저는 고양이가 좋아요 is also correct).
저는 음악을 좋아요.

English “like” takes an object, but 좋다 is an adjective and can’t: use 음악을 좋아해요 or 음악이 좋아요.

제 친구는 한국 영화를 좋아해요.
좋다 expresses the speaker’s own feeling, so for someone else’s likes use 좋아하다.
