How they differ
1. 이/가 끝나다 vs 을/를 끝내다 English “finish” works both ways, Korean doesn’t: 수업이 끝났어요 (Class is over) ○ / 수업을 끝났어요 ✕. If a person does the finishing: 숙제를 끝냈어요 (I finished my homework) ○ / 숙제가 끝냈어요 ✕.
2. 마치다 is the formal “finish”. Announcements and polite speech prefer 마치다: 이것으로 발표를 마치겠습니다 (That concludes my presentation). It suits completing something planned: 학업을 마치다 (complete one’s studies), 식사를 마치다 (finish a meal), 임기를 마치다 (serve out a term).
3. 끝내다 can mean “put an end to”. 관계를 끝내다 (end a relationship), 싸움을 끝내다 (end a fight): 마치다 doesn’t work here, since it means completing, not stopping. In slang, 끝내준다 means “awesome”.
4. 수업이 마치다? You may hear 수업 마치고 a lot, but it’s understood as someone finishing class (transitive). 수업이 마쳤어요 is regional/nonstandard; the standard is 수업이 끝났어요.
