When to use it

The vowel follows the -아요/어요 rule: 축하해 마지않다, 감사해 마지않다, 믿어 마지않다.

It attaches to a short list of verbs of feeling — 축하하다, 감사하다, 기대하다, 믿다, 사랑하다, 존경하다. Ordinary action verbs do not take it.

The feelings are almost always positive, since the phrase is a device for public warmth: 진심으로 축하해 마지않습니다.

The register is high — opening remarks, congratulatory addresses, formal correspondence. In ordinary speech it would sound absurd.

1. 여러분의 앞날을 축하해 마지않습니다.

   I offer my warmest congratulations on your future.

2. 그동안 베풀어 주신 은혜에 감사해 마지않습니다.

   I am deeply grateful for all the kindness you have shown.

3. 두 분의 앞날에 행복이 가득하기를 바라 마지않습니다.

   I sincerely hope the years ahead bring you every happiness.

4. 제가 존경해 마지않는 선생님이십니다.

   This is a teacher for whom I have the deepest respect.

5. 직접 만드신 정성에 감탄해 마지않았습니다.

   I could not but admire the care that went into making it.

6. 앞으로의 활약을 기대해 마지않습니다.

   We look forward with the greatest anticipation to what you will do.

Compared with

• 진심으로

  The adverb does the same job plainly and works anywhere. 마지않다 builds the emphasis into the predicate and raises the register sharply.

  진심으로 축하합니다. (any occasion)  /  축하해 마지않습니다. (formal address)

• -(으)ㄹ 따름이다

  Both are ceremonial. 따름이다 narrows a claim modestly; 마지않다 amplifies a feeling generously.

  감사할 따름입니다. (simply grateful)  /  감사해 마지않습니다. (deeply grateful)

• -지 않다

  Worth noting the shape: 마지않다 contains 말다 plus 않다, a double negative that comes out as emphasis rather than negation.

  축하해 마지않습니다 = 축하하기를 그치지 않습니다

Watch out

• 점심을 먹어 마지않았습니다.

  점심을 맛있게 먹었습니다.

  The phrase takes verbs of feeling. An ordinary action verb produces nonsense.

• 그 결정을 비난해 마지않습니다.

  그 결정에 깊은 유감을 표합니다.

  The construction is a vehicle for public warmth. Attaching it to hostility jars.

• 야, 축하해 마지않아.

  야, 진짜 축하해.

  마지않다 is ceremonial. Among friends it sounds like a parody of a speech.
