When to use it

Attachment is the standard rule with the ㄹ short form: 만들다 gives 만들 따름이다. 따름 is a noun and takes a space.

It narrows a statement to one thing and closes it, exactly as 뿐이다 does. The difference is register: 따름이다 is formal only, and using it casually sounds theatrical.

A handful of set phrases account for most of its use: 감사할 따름입니다, 안타까울 따름입니다, 죄송할 따름입니다. Learning these whole is efficient.

It also expresses helplessness — there is nothing else one can do: 그저 기다릴 따름입니다.

In use

1. 그저 감사할 따름입니다.

   I am simply grateful.

2. 이런 결과가 나와 안타까울 따름입니다.

   It is only regrettable that it came to this.

3. 저는 맡은 일을 했을 따름입니다.

   I merely did the job assigned to me.

4. 지금으로서는 결과를 기다릴 따름입니다.

   For now we can only wait for the result.

5. 불편을 드려 죄송할 따름입니다.

   We can only apologise for the inconvenience.

6. 저희는 좋은 제품을 만들 따름입니다.

   We simply make good products.

Compared with

• -(으)ㄹ 뿐이다

  Identical meaning, different register. 뿐이다 works everywhere; 따름이다 marks the sentence as formal.

  감사할 뿐이에요. (speech)  /  감사할 따름입니다. (formal statement)

• -에 불과하다

  불과하다 diminishes a noun in argument; 따름이다 limits a predicate, often to express modesty or helplessness.

  소문에 불과합니다. (merely rumour)  /  기다릴 따름입니다. (we can only wait)

• -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다

  수밖에 없다 states there is no alternative plainly; 따름이다 says the same with more restraint and formality.

  기다릴 수밖에 없어요.  /  기다릴 따름입니다.

Watch out

• 저희는 좋은 제품을 만들을 따름입니다.

  저희는 좋은 제품을 만들 따름입니다.

  A stem ending in ㄹ already supplies it, as with 만들 거예요 and 만들 뿐이에요.

• 야, 나는 그냥 갈 따름이야.

  야, 나는 그냥 갈 뿐이야.

  따름이다 is formal. Among friends it sounds like a press statement.

• 그저 감사할따름입니다.

  그저 감사할 따름입니다.

  따름 is a noun and takes a space after the modifier.
