When to use it

Attach -느니 to a verb stem; ㄹ drops, giving 만드느니. No tense goes in front. The fuller -느니 차라리 is very common, and 차라리 usually appears in the second clause.

Both options are undesirable. 여기서 기다리느니 차라리 걸어가겠어요 — waiting is bad, walking is also a chore, but walking is preferable.

Because of that, it is not a neutral comparison. To say one option is simply better, Korean uses -는 것보다.

The register is emphatic and a little dramatic, which is why it turns up in complaints and in proverbs.

In use

1. 여기서 기다리느니 차라리 걸어가겠어요.

   Rather than wait here, I’d sooner walk.

2. 그렇게 대충 하느니 안 하는 게 나아요.

   Rather than do it that carelessly, better not to do it at all.

3. 사 먹느니 직접 만드는 게 낫겠어요.

   Rather than buy it, I’d be better off making it myself.

4. 이런 대우를 받느니 그만두겠습니다.

   Rather than be treated like this, I’ll resign.

5. 혼자 고민하느니 물어보는 게 빨라요.

   Rather than agonise alone, it’s quicker to ask.

6. 늦게 만드느니 차라리 시켜 먹읍시다.

   Rather than cook this late, let’s just order in.

Compared with

• -는 것보다

  -는 것보다 compares neutrally; -느니 assumes both options are unwelcome and picks the lesser one.

  걷는 것보다 빨라요. (faster than walking)  /  기다리느니 걷겠어요. (I’d sooner walk than wait)

• -는 게 좋겠다

  -는 게 좋겠다 recommends; -느니 rejects one option in favour of another. The two often appear in the same sentence.

  걷는 게 좋겠어요.  /  기다리느니 걷는 게 좋겠어요.

• -(으)ㄹ 바에야

  A stronger and more literary version of the same idea, common in fixed expressions and proverbs.

  기다리느니 걷겠다.  /  기다릴 바에야 걷겠다.

Watch out

• 이 식당이 좋으니 저 식당에 가느니 여기 갑시다.

  저 식당에 가느니 여기가 낫겠어요.

  -느니 sets up a rejected option first and the preferred one second. It cannot simply mean “because.”

• 늦게 만들느니 시켜 먹읍시다.

  늦게 만드느니 시켜 먹읍시다.

  Stems ending in ㄹ drop it before -느니, as they do before -는 and -나.

• 이 영화가 재미있느니 저 영화를 보겠어요.

  저 영화를 보느니 이 영화를 보겠어요.

  The construction takes verbs, and the first clause must be the option being rejected.
