When to use it

Vowel stems take -ㅁ에도 불구하고, consonant stems -음에도 불구하고. Stems in ㄹ keep the ㄹ and add ㅁ: 만들다 gives 만듦에도 불구하고. Tense may appear inside: 노력했음에도 불구하고.

With a noun it attaches directly: 악천후에도 불구하고, 반대에도 불구하고.

The second clause states what happened anyway, against expectation: 여러 차례 노력했음에도 불구하고 결과는 달라지지 않았다.

The register is firmly written. In speech, -는데도 or -지만 carries the same meaning without the weight.

   Notwithstanding widespread opposition, the plan went ahead unchanged.

4. 경험이 부족함에도 불구하고 훌륭히 해냈어요.

   Despite a lack of experience, she carried it off admirably.

5. 직접 만듦에도 불구하고 가격이 저렴합니다.

   Despite being handmade, the price is low.

6. 바쁘심에도 불구하고 시간을 내 주셔서 감사합니다.

   Thank you for making time despite how busy you are.

Compared with

• -는데도

  Same meaning, everyday register. -는데도 is what you say; -(으)ㅁ에도 불구하고 is what you write in a report.

  노력했는데도 안 됐어요. (speech)  /  노력했음에도 불구하고 (writing)

• -고도

  -고도 is compact and often critical; 불구하고 is neutral and states the contrast formally.

  알고도 말 안 했어요. (and still didn’t)  /  알았음에도 불구하고 (despite knowing)

• -더라도

  -더라도 supposes something that has not happened; 불구하고 concedes something that did.

  힘들더라도 하세요. (even if it’s hard)  /  힘들었음에도 불구하고 해냈다. (though it was hard)

Watch out

• 노력하에도 불구하고 결과가 같았다.

  노력했음에도 불구하고 결과가 같았다.

  The verb has to be nominalised with -(으)ㅁ first. 노력하다 gives 노력함, and with past tense 노력했음.

• 직접 만들음에도 불구하고 저렴합니다.

  직접 만듦에도 불구하고 저렴합니다.

  A ㄹ stem keeps the ㄹ and adds ㅁ, giving 만듦 rather than 만들음.

• 야, 비 왔음에도 불구하고 갔어.

  야, 비 왔는데도 갔어.

  This is document language. In casual speech, -는데도 is the natural form.
