-아/어도 되다

may, it’s alright to — permission

Asks for or grants permission. Literally “even if you do it, it works out” — which is why the negative answer is not its mirror image.

    When to use it

The vowel follows the same rule as -아요/어요: 가도 돼요, 먹어도 돼요, 해도 돼요. As a question it asks permission; as a statement it grants it.

되다 can be swapped for 괜찮다 or 좋다 with no change in meaning: 가도 괜찮아요, 먹어도 좋아요. 되다 is the most common in speech.

The point that catches people is the refusal. English answers “may I?” with “no, you may not,” keeping the same verb. Korean switches construction entirely: the negative of -아/어도 되다 is -(으)면 안 되다. 아니요, 가면 안 돼요.

You can come a bit late tomorrow.

    Compared with

    • -(으)면 안 되다

The two form a permission pair, but not by simple negation. Answering “no” requires switching from -아/어도 to -(으)면.

가도 돼요? → 네, 가도 돼요. / 아니요, 가면 안 돼요.

    • -(으)ㄹ 수 있다

English “can” blurs ability and permission; Korean does not. If a rule or a person decides, use -아/어도 되다.

수영할 수 있어요. (I’m able to)  /  수영해도 돼요. (I’m allowed to)

    • -(으)세요

-(으)세요 invites or instructs; -아/어도 되다 merely permits. Offering a seat with 앉으세요 is warm; 앉아도 돼요 sounds like you are tolerating it.

여기 앉으세요. (please, do sit)  /  여기 앉아도 돼요. (you may sit here)

    Watch out

    • 이 컴퓨터를 사용하어도 돼요?

      이 컴퓨터를 사용해도 돼요?

하다 becomes 해 before 도 되다, as everywhere else. 운동해도, 공부해도, 전화해도.

    • 아니요, 안 가도 돼요. — meaning “no, you may not go”

      아니요, 가면 안 돼요.

안 가도 돼요 means “you don’t have to go” — permission not to. To forbid, use -(으)면 안 되다.

    • 여기 앉아도 되세요?

      여기 앉아도 돼요?

The honorific belongs on the main verb, not on 되다. If you must raise it, say 앉으셔도 돼요.
