When to use it

Attachment is the standard rule with the ㄹ short form: 만들다 gives 만들 리 만무하다. 리 is a noun and takes a space, and unlike 리가 없다 the 가 is normally omitted.

As with 리가 없다, this is about likelihood, not ability. It denies that something could plausibly be the case.

The past goes inside for something already finished: 벌써 도착했을 리 만무하다.

The register is literary and emphatic. 만무하다 is a Sino-Korean word that rarely appears elsewhere, which is why the phrase sounds bookish in ordinary conversation.

1. 그가 그런 말을 했을 리 만무하다.

   There is no possibility whatever that he said such a thing.

2. 방금 출발했는데 벌써 도착했을 리 만무하다.

   He only just left; there is no way he has already arrived.

3. 그런 조건을 받아들일 리 만무하다.

   They would never accept such terms.

4. 이 가격에 그런 품질일 리 만무합니다.

   At that price the quality could not possibly be so good.

5. 혼자서 이걸 다 만들 리 만무하다.

   There is no way one person made all of this.

6. 사정을 모를 리 만무한데도 아무 말이 없었다.

   He could not possibly have been unaware, yet he said nothing.

Compared with

• -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다

  Same meaning, everyday register. 리가 없다 is what people say; 리 만무하다 belongs to writing and formal argument.

  그럴 리가 없어요. (speech)  /  그럴 리 만무하다. (writing)

• -(으)ㄹ 수 없다

  수 없다 denies ability; 리 만무하다 denies likelihood. Someone may be entirely capable and still, in your view, never do it.

  만들 수 없다. (unable to make it)  /  만들 리 만무하다. (would never have made it)

• -(으)ㄹ 법하다

  Direct opposites on the same scale. 법하다 accepts something as plausible; 리 만무하다 rules it out entirely.

  그럴 법해요. (that could well be)  /  그럴 리 만무하다. (out of the question)

Watch out

• 혼자서 이걸 다 만들을 리 만무하다.

  혼자서 이걸 다 만들 리 만무하다.

  A stem ending in ㄹ already supplies it, as with 만들 거예요 and 만들 뿐이다.

• 저는 한국어를 할 리 만무합니다.

  저는 한국어를 할 수 없습니다.

  리 만무하다 rejects a possibility on principle. To say you are unable, the phrase is 수 없다.

• 야, 걔가 그럴 리 만무해.

  야, 걔가 그럴 리가 없어.

  만무하다 is literary. Among friends it sounds like a line from a novel.
