-(으)ㄹ 새 없이

without a moment to

Not even the smallest gap. 새 means an interval, and this phrase says there wasn’t one — most famously in 눈코 뜰 새 없이.

    When to use it

Attachment is the standard rule with the ㄹ short form: 만들다 gives 만들 새 없이. 새 is a noun and takes a space.

It appears only in the negative — 새 없이, 새 없다, 새도 없이. There is no positive counterpart.

The best-known instance is the set phrase 눈코 뜰 새 없이 — too busy even to open one’s eyes and nose. It is worth learning whole, since it accounts for a good share of the usage.

Very close to -(으)ㄹ 겨를이 없다. 겨를 is a gap in time; 새 is any interval at all, which makes it slightly more vivid and more idiomatic.

    Compared with

    • -(으)ㄹ 겨를이 없다

Nearly the same. 겨를 is specifically a gap in time and sounds more formal; 새 is any interval and is more idiomatic.

      쉴 겨를이 없어요.  /  쉴 새 없이 일했어요.

    • -기가 무섭게

기가 무섭게 marks two events following instantly on one another; 새 없이 describes an unbroken stretch with no gaps at all.

앉기가 무섭게 전화가 왔다. (right after)  /  쉴 새 없이 일했다. (continuously)

    • 눈코 뜰 새 없다

Worth memorising as a unit. It is the commonest form of the phrase and functions as an idiom meaning “frantically busy.”

눈코 뜰 새 없이 바쁘다.  /  눈코 뜰 새가 없었다.

    Watch out

    • 오늘은 쉴 새가 있어요.

      오늘은 쉴 시간이 있어요.

새 appears in the negative. To say you do have time, use 시간 or 여유.

    • 직접 만들을 새 없이 주문이 들어옵니다.

직접 만들 새 없이 주문이 들어옵니다.

A stem ending in ㄹ already supplies it, as with 만들 거예요 and 만들 뿐이다.

    • 눈코 뜰새 없이 바쁩니다.

      눈코 뜰 새 없이 바쁩니다.

새 is a noun and takes a space after the modifier.
