now that, given that

Takes a fact as settled and draws a firm conclusion from it. The second clause is never neutral — it states what must now be done.

Build it

Pick a form

    stemending

    When to use it

Completed actions take -(으)ㄴ 이상, ongoing states -는 이상. Stems in ㄹ drop it, and 이상 takes a space.

The first clause is treated as a given, no longer up for discussion. The second states an obligation or resolve:

That second clause is required. Endings like -아야 하다, -겠다, -(으)ㄹ 수 없다 fit; a plain description does not, because the construction exists to draw a conclusion.

Against -는 한, the difference is which way the condition points. -는 한 says the situation must keep holding; 이상 says it already holds and settles the matter.

    How to attach it

    In use

Now that we’ve started, we must see it through.

Having promised, I will certainly keep my word.

As long as you work at this company, you have to follow the rules.

Now that I know the truth, I can’t pretend otherwise.

Since I made it myself, I’ll take responsibility for the quality.

Once a contract has been signed, cancellation is difficult.

    Compared with

-는 한 requires the condition to keep holding; 이상 treats it as already established and moves to the consequence.

(as long as you keep trying)  /  시작한 이상 끝내야 한다. (now that we’ve begun)

때문에 gives a plain cause; 이상 adds that the fact is settled and something now follows from it as a duty.

(because we started)  /  시작한 이상 끝내야 해요. (having started, we must finish)

-(으)니까 also leads into commands, but neutrally. 이상 carries a note of commitment or resignation.

(so do it)  /  시작한 이상 해야 합니다. (having started, it must be done)

    Watch out

The second clause has to state what now follows as an obligation or resolve. A plain description leaves the construction pointless.

Stems ending in ㄹ drop it before -(으)ㄴ, as in 만든 음식 and 아는 사람.

The employment is ongoing, not completed, so the modifier is -는.
