The form follows the modifier system: verbs take -는 양, adjectives and completed actions -(으)ㄴ 양. Stems in ㄹ drop it, and 양 is a noun taking a space.

It appears in two shapes. As a manner phrase before a verb: 모든 것을 아는 양 말했다. And with 하다, meaning to pretend: 못 들은 양했다.

The comparison is usually false and the observation faintly critical — the person is putting it on.

The register is literary. In speech, -는 척하다 and -는 듯이 do the same work.
