    하+-(으)ㄹ 수 있다

    stemending

    When to use it

It covers both skill — 한국어를 할 수 있어요 — and circumstantial possibility: 내일은 만날 수 있어요. The negative 없다 covers the matching impossibilities.

Because 수 is a noun, it stands as its own word: 할 수 있어요, never 할수 있어요. Attachment follows the standard rule, and a ㄹ stem adds nothing: 만들다 gives 만들 수 있어요.

Against 못, the difference is where the obstacle sits. -(으)ㄹ 수 없다 points at the impossibility itself — a rule, a physical limit, a lack of skill. 못 points at a specific attempt that failed. For “photography is not allowed here,” Korean wants 찍을 수 없어요; for “I couldn’t get a photo today,” 못 찍었어요.

    How to attach it

That kind of thing can happen.

    Compared with

    • 못

-(으)ㄹ 수 없다 states that no way exists; 못 reports that a particular attempt was blocked. Rules and permanent limits take the first.

여기에서 담배를 피울 수 없어요. (not allowed)  /  어제는 못 피웠어요. (couldn’t manage to)

    • -(으)ㄹ 줄 알다

This one is specifically about a skill you have learned. For swimming, driving, or playing an instrument it is the more precise choice.

수영할 수 있어요. (I’m able to swim)  /  수영할 줄 알아요. (I know how to swim)

    • -아/어도 되다

“Can” in English covers both ability and permission. Korean splits them: ability takes 수 있다, permission takes -아/어도 되다.

갈 수 있어요. (I’m able to go)  /  가도 돼요. (I’m allowed to go)

    Watch out

    • 이 음식을 만들을 수 있어요.

      이 음식을 만들 수 있어요.

A stem ending in ㄹ already supplies it. The same applies to 살 수 있어요 and 알 수 있어요.

    • 한국어를 할수 있어요.

      한국어를 할 수 있어요.

수 is a noun and stands apart. Writing it joined is a spelling error, though a common one online.

    • 여기에서 사진을 못 찍을 수 있어요.

      여기에서 사진을 찍을 수 없어요.

Do not stack the two negatives. Either 못 찍어요 or 찍을 수 없어요 — not both.
