-아/어 보다

try doing; have done before

Attaches 보다 — literally “see” — to another verb. In the present it means giving something a go; in the past it reports experience.

    When to use it

The vowel follows the familiar -아요/어요 rule, merges included: 먹어 보다, 가 보다, 해 보다.

In the present it invites or attempts: 한번 먹어 보세요 (give it a try). This is the standard way to recommend something in Korean, far more common than a bare imperative.

In the past it reports experience: 제주도에 가 봤어요 (I’ve been to Jeju). The nuance is “I have had that experience,” not merely “I went” — which is why 갔어요 and 가 봤어요 answer different questions.

One verb refuses to combine: 보다 itself. 영화를 봐 보세요 sounds wrong; just say 보세요.

    Compared with

    • -(으)ㄴ 적이 있다

Both report experience. -아/어 봤다 stresses that you gave it a go; -(으)ㄴ 적이 있다 states more neutrally that the event happened at some point.

번지점프를 해 봤어요. (I tried bungee jumping)  /  번지점프를 한 적이 있어요. (I have done it before)

    • -았/었-

The plain past reports a specific event; -아/어 봤다 reports the experience of having done it. For yesterday’s lunch, use the plain past.

어제 김치를 먹었어요. (I ate kimchi yesterday)  /  김치를 먹어 봤어요. (I’ve tried kimchi)

    • -(으)세요

A bare imperative can sound blunt when recommending. Adding 보다 turns it into an invitation to try, which is why menus and guidebooks use it constantly.

이거 드세요. (eat this)  /  이거 드셔 보세요. (do give this a try)

    Watch out

    • 다시 생각하어 보세요.

      다시 생각해 보세요.

하다 becomes 해 before 보다, as it does everywhere else. 연습해 보다, 시도해 보다, 전화해 보다.

    • 이 영화를 봐 보세요.

      이 영화를 보세요.

보다 cannot attach to itself. Recommend a film with a plain 보세요 or 한번 보세요.

    • 어제 그 식당에 가 봤어요. — meaning simply “I went there yesterday”

      어제 그 식당에 갔어요.

With a specific time word, the plain past is the natural choice. -아/어 봤다 belongs with questions about experience in general.
