TOPIK I · Level 2

-(으)ㄴ 지

since — how long it has been

Measures the time elapsed since something happened. Built on the past modifier plus 지, a noun — which is why it needs a space, and why it is not the same word as -는지.

Build it

Pick a verb

    +-(으)ㄴ 지 … 되다

    stemending

    When to use it

The pattern is -(으)ㄴ 지 + duration + 되다: 한국에 온 지 삼 년 됐어요 (it’s been three years since I came to Korea). 지나다 and 넘다 work in place of 되다.

Attachment uses the past modifier, so ㄹ drops: 살다 gives 산 지.

Two mechanical points. 지 is a noun, so it is written with a space before it — 온 지, not 온지. And it must not be confused with -는지, a completely different ending meaning “whether,” which is written joined: 가는지 몰라요.

English says “I have been here for three years,” putting the duration on the main verb. Korean puts the arrival in the past modifier and measures from there.

    How to attach it

    Stem typeFormExample
    Ends in a vowel-ㄴ 지오다 →
    Ends in a consonant-은 지먹다 → 은 지
    Ends in ㄹㄹ drops살다 →
Closing verb되다, 지나다, 넘다삼 년 됐어요
Spacing지 is a separate word온 지 — not 온지
    Different word-는지 = whether는지 몰라요

    In use

    1. 한국에 온 지 삼 년 됐어요.

It’s been three years since I came to Korea.

    2. 한국어를 배운 지 얼마나 됐어요?

How long have you been learning Korean?

    3. 이 회사에서 일한 지 육 개월쯤 됐어요.

I’ve been at this company for about six months.

    4. 밥을 먹은 지 두 시간이 지났어요.

Two hours have passed since I ate.

    5. 이 동네에 산 지 오래됐어요.

I’ve lived in this neighbourhood for a long time.

    6. 그 사람을 만난 지 일 년이 넘었어요.

It’s been over a year since I met him.

    Compared with

    • -(으)ㄴ 후에

Both sit on the past modifier, but 후에 sequences two events while 지 measures elapsed time.

밥을 먹은 후에 산책했어요. (after eating)  /  밥을 먹은 지 두 시간 됐어요. (two hours since eating)

    • 동안

동안 covers a stretch during which something happened; -(으)ㄴ 지 counts forward from a starting point to now.

삼 년 동안 살았어요. (lived there for three years)  /  산 지 삼 년 됐어요. (I’ve lived here three years so far)

    • -는지

Different word, similar look. -는지 means “whether” and joins directly to the stem with no space.

      온 지 삼 년 됐어요. (three years since coming)  /  오는지 모르겠어요. (I don’t know whether he’s coming)

    Watch out

    • 이 동네에 살은 지 오래됐어요.

      이 동네에 산 지 오래됐어요.

Stems ending in ㄹ drop it before the past modifier: 산 지, 만든 지, 아는 사람.

    • 한국에 온지 삼 년 됐어요.

      한국에 온 지 삼 년 됐어요.

지 is a noun and takes a space. Written joined, it becomes the unrelated ending -는지.

    • 한국어를 배우는 지 삼 년 됐어요.

      한국어를 배운 지 삼 년 됐어요.

The measurement starts from a completed point, so the modifier must be past. -는 would describe something ongoing.
