빌리다 vs 빌려주다
borrow, rent · lend
빌리다 is taking something temporarily (borrow). Add the giving verb 주다 and you get 빌려주다: handing it over temporarily (lend).
At a glance
| Word | Core meaning | Nuance | Typical pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| 빌리다 | borrow; rent (for a fee) | You receive. Source takes 에서/에게서/한테(서). | N에서/에게서 N을/를 빌리다 책을 빌리다 / 빌려도 돼요? |
| 빌려주다 | lend | You give. 빌리다 + -아/어 주다; humble form 빌려 드리다. | N에게 N을/를 빌려주다 빌려주세요 / 빌려 드릴게요 |
How they differ
1. Who receives decides the verb. Friend gives, I receive: 친구한테 돈을 빌렸어요 (I borrowed money from a friend). I give, friend receives: 친구한테 돈을 빌려줬어요 (I lent money to a friend). Note 한테 can mark either side, so the verb carries the meaning.
2. “Can you lend me…?” vs “Can I borrow…?” Both requests work, but with different verbs: 펜 좀 빌려주세요 (Please lend me a pen) ○, 펜 좀 빌려도 돼요? (Can I borrow a pen?) ○. Mixing them fails: 펜 좀 빌리세요 ✕. English speakers who say “borrow me” should watch this.
3. 빌리다 also covers renting. Paid, short-term use is still 빌리다: 자전거를 빌렸어요 (I rented a bike), 한복을 빌려 입었어요 (I rented a hanbok and wore it). English “rent” doesn’t need a separate word here.

One step further
빌려주다 is built with -아/어 주세요’s helper verb 주다, so it behaves like any giving verb: 빌려 드릴게요 to a superior. The person you lend to takes 에게/한테; the person you borrow from takes 에게서/한테서.
