Confusing Words · TOPIK II
가르치다 vs 가리키다
to teach · to point at, to indicate
They sound alike, and even native speakers blur them into the nonstandard 가르키다. 가르치다 passes on knowledge; 가리키다 points your finger, a needle or a word at something.
At a glance
| Word | Core meaning | Nuance | Typical pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| 가르치다 | to teach | Subjects, skills, how to do something. Also “tell” (e.g. a phone number) in speech. | N에게 N을/를 가르치다 한국어를 가르치다 |
| 가리키다 | to point at, to indicate | With a finger, a clock hand, an arrow; also “refer to” (a word). | N을/를 가리키다 손가락으로 가리키다 / 시계가 N시를 가리키다 |
How they differ
1. 가르치다 = teach. 한국어를 가르쳐요 (I teach Korean). The conjugated form is 가르쳐요 ○ / 가르켜요 ✕.
2. 가리키다 = point at. 손가락으로 가리켰어요 (pointed with a finger), 시계가 12시를 가리켜요 (the clock shows 12). Conjugated: 가리켜요.
3. 가르키다 does not exist in standard Korean. It’s a very common mix-up among native speakers too, but it’s marked wrong in writing and on the TOPIK. Choose by meaning: teach → 가르치다, point → 가리키다.
4. Telling the way: 가르쳐 주다, not 가리키다. 길을 가르쳐 주세요 ○ / 길을 가리켜 주세요 △ (only if you literally want them to point). In everyday speech, 알려 주세요 is even more common for giving information.
