꼭 vs 반드시 vs 절대
definitely, be sure to · without fail, necessarily · never, absolutely (not)
꼭 and 반드시 both mean “definitely (do it)”: 꼭 is warm and everyday, 반드시 is firm and formal. 절대 is the negative side, “never / absolutely not”.
At a glance
| Word | Core meaning | Nuance | Typical pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| 꼭 | definitely, be sure to, really | Everyday, personal: requests, wishes, promises. Also “exactly”: 꼭 맞다, 꼭 닮다. | 꼭 -(으)세요 / 꼭 -고 싶다 꼭 맞다, 꼭 닮다 |
| 반드시 | without fail, necessarily, surely | Firmer and more formal: rules, instructions, strong conviction. Common in writing. | 반드시 -아/어야 하다 반드시 -(으)ㄹ 것이다 |
| 절대 | never, absolutely (not) | Almost always with a negative: 안/못, -지 마세요, 없다, 아니다. Also 절대로. | 절대 안/못/-지 마세요 절대로, 절대 아니다 |
How they differ
1. Positive vs negative. 꼭 and 반드시 push toward doing something; 절대 pushes against it. 꼭 오세요 (be sure to come) ○, 절대 늦지 마세요 (never be late) ○, but 절대 오세요 ✕. In standard Korean, 절대 needs a negative partner.
2. The English trap: “absolutely”. English “I’ll absolutely pass” is positive, so Korean uses 꼭 합격할 거예요 ○ / 절대 합격할 거예요 ✕. You may hear 절대 in positive sentences in casual talk, but learners should keep it for negatives.
3. 꼭 is personal, 반드시 is a rule. To a friend: 꼭 연락해! (be sure to call me!). In a notice: 반드시 신분증을 지참하십시오 (you must bring ID). 반드시 often comes with -아/어야 하다 and sounds like a must: see -아/어야 되다.
4. Only 꼭 means “exactly”. 이 옷이 꼭 맞아요 (these clothes fit perfectly), 엄마를 꼭 닮았어요 (she looks just like her mom). 반드시 맞아요 ✕ in this sense. 꼭 also expresses a heartfelt wish: 꼭 한번 가 보고 싶어요 (I’d really love to go there once).
