high · expensive · big / tall
English “tall” and “high” don’t map neatly onto Korean. 높다 is for height above the ground (mountains, buildings, temperature), 크다 is for size — including how tall a person is — and 비싸다 is for price.
At a glance
| Word | Core meaning | Nuance | Typical pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| 높다 | high, tall (position/level) | Mountains, buildings, ceilings, temperature, fever, scores, pitch. Not for people’s height.
| 비싸다 | expensive | The item is the subject: 이 옷은 비싸요.
| 크다 | big, large; tall (people) | General size, clothes that are too big, loud sounds, and 키가 크다 for tall people.
How they differ
1. 높다 vs 크다 — height vs size. Things measured upward from the ground or on a scale take 높다: 산이 높아요 (the mountain is high), 기온이 높아요 (the temperature is high). A person’s height is size, so English “tall” becomes
2. 비싸다 is for things; 높다 only for “price”. When the item is the subject, only With 가격 or 물가 as the subject, both are fine: 가격이 비싸요 ○ / 가격이 높아요 ○ (높다 sounds a bit more formal, like news or reports).
3. Loud vs high-pitched. “The music is too loud” is 소리가 너무 커요. 소리가 높아요 means the pitch is high. Don’t translate “the volume is too high” word for word with 소리.
