싫다 vs 싫어하다
(something) is disliked; don’t want to · to dislike, to hate
싫다 is an adjective for your own feeling: the thing takes 이/가. 싫어하다 is a verb that takes 을/를 and can describe anyone’s dislikes.
At a glance
| Word | Core meaning | Nuance | Typical pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| 싫다 | to be disliked; to not want | Adjective. N이/가 싫다, -기(가) 싫다. Speaker’s own feeling; 싫어요! = No! | N이/가 싫다 -기(가) 싫다 |
| 싫어하다 | to dislike, to hate | Verb. N을/를 싫어하다. Habitual dislike; used for other people. | N을/를 싫어하다 -는 것을 싫어하다 |
How they differ
1. 이/가 with 싫다, 을/를 with 싫어하다. 저는 벌레가 싫어요 ○ / 저는 벌레를 싫어해요 ○. Crossing them is wrong: 벌레를 싫어요 ✕ / 벌레가 싫어해요 ✕. English “hate” takes an object, which pushes learners toward 을/를 with 싫다.
2. Other people → 싫어하다. 싫다 is a feeling only the speaker can report directly. 동생은 채소를 싫어해요 ○ / 동생은 채소가 싫어요 ✕.
3. “I don’t want to” = -기 싫다. 일어나기 싫어요 (I don’t want to get up) is about right now. 일찍 일어나는 것을 싫어해요 (I hate getting up early) is about your habits.
4. 싫어요 as a refusal. On its own, 싫어요! is a blunt “No!” or “I don’t want to!”. It sounds childish or rude to a superior; use 괜찮아요 or 다음에 할게요 to decline politely.
