에
at, in, on, to — place and time
Points to a place something is, a place something is heading, or a time something happens. One form for every noun; the difficulty is knowing when Korean wants 에 and when it wants 에서.

When to use it
에 does three separate jobs. It marks where something sits, with 있다, 없다, 살다: 가방이 책상 위에 있어요. It marks where something is going, with 가다, 오다, 다니다, 도착하다: 학교에 가요. And it marks when: 세 시에 만나요.
What ties the three together is that nothing is happening at the noun. The moment a real action takes place at a location, Korean switches to 에서. Compare 학교에 있어요 (I am at school) with 학교에서 공부해요 (I study at school). This one distinction accounts for most 에 errors.
Two limits worth memorising now. Time words that already mean “now” or “then” — 오늘, 어제, 내일, 지금, 언제, 매일 — take no 에 at all. And people never take 에; they take 에게 or 한테.
How to attach it
| Use | Verbs it goes with | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Static location | 있다, 없다, 살다 | 집에 있어요 |
| Destination | 가다, 오다, 다니다, 도착하다 | 학교에 가요 |
| Point in time | any | 세 시에 만나요 |
| Per unit | price, rate | 한 개에 천 원이에요 |
| Never with | 오늘, 어제, 내일, 지금, 언제 | 오늘 가요 — not 오늘에 |
| People take | 에게 / 한테 instead | 친구한테 줬어요 — not 친구에 |

Compared with
에서
에 marks a place as a position or a destination. 에서 marks it as the site of an activity. If you can ask “what is being done there?” and get an answer, use 에서.
회사에 있어요. (I’m at the office) / 회사에서 일해요. (I work at the office)
에게 / 한테
에 never attaches to a person or an animal. For a human recipient, use 한테 in speech, 에게 in writing, 께 to someone you are honouring. 에 stays for places, organisations, and plants.
친구한테 보냈어요. (sent to a friend) / 회사에 보냈어요. (sent to the company)
(으)로
Both can mark a destination, but 에 names the endpoint while (으)로 names the direction taken. With 가다 either works; (으)로 sounds more like “head toward.”
학교에 가요. (going to school) / 학교로 가요. (heading in the direction of school)
Watch out
도서관에 공부해요.
도서관에서 공부해요.
Studying is an action, so the location takes 에서. Reserve 에 for 있다, 없다, 살다, and for destinations.
오늘에 시간이 없어요.
오늘 시간이 없어요.
오늘, 어제, 내일, 지금, 매일, 언제 already carry the time reference and take no particle. 세 시에 and 월요일에 do take 에.
친구에 선물을 줬어요.
친구한테 선물을 줬어요.
People and animals take 에게 or 한테. 에 is for places and organisations.
