How they differ

1. 알다 is knowing — and its negative is 모르다. (I know the number). To say you don’t know, use 알다 also covers finding out: 집에 와서 알았어요 (I found out when I got home).

2. “I understand” as a reply is 알겠어요, not 이해해요. When someone gives you information or an instruction, answer Save 이해하다 for grasping content or reasons: 설명을 이해했어요 (I understood the explanation), 그 사람 마음을 이해해요 (I understand how he feels).

3. 깨닫다 is an inner realization, not new information. (I realized how much my parents love me) ○. But learning a fact from the news is English “realize” is often just 알다.

4. When 알다 and 깨닫다 overlap. Noticing something you’d missed can take either: 우산을 안 가져온 걸 알았어요 / 깨달았어요 are both fine. 깨닫다 sounds a bit weightier; in casual speech 알다 is more common.
