길다 vs 멀다
long · far
English says “a long way” for distance, but Korean keeps the two apart. 길다 measures the length of a thing or a period of time; 멀다 measures how far one place is from another.
At a glance
| Word | Core meaning | Nuance | Typical pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| 길다 | long | Length of objects (hair, legs, a line) and duration (vacation, winter, a movie). | 머리가 길다 시간이 길다 |
| 멀다 | far | Distance between places, usually with A에서 B까지. Also “still a long way off” in time: 아직 멀었어요. | A에서 B까지 멀다 집이 멀다 |
How they differ
1. Length vs distance. The thing itself is long: 다리가 길어요 (long legs), 줄이 길어요 (the line is long). The gap between two places is far: 회사가 멀어요 ○ / 회사가 길어요 ✕. Translate “It’s a long way to school” as 학교가 멀어요.
2. Both can talk about time — differently. 길다 is how long something lasts: 방학이 길어요 (the vacation is long). 멀다 is how far off something still is: 방학까지 아직 멀었어요 (vacation is still a long way off) ○ / 방학까지 아직 길어요 ✕. Note the past form 멀었어요 in this set phrase.
3. “For a long time” is 오래. When “long” describes how long you do something, use the adverb 오래: 오래 기다렸어요 ○ / 길게 기다렸어요 △. Keep 길다 for describing nouns: 긴 시간 (a long time).
