At a glance
| Word | Core meaning | Nuance | Typical pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| 입다 | to wear / put on clothes | Shirts, coats, pants, skirts, dresses, hanbok. | 옷/바지/치마를 입다 |
| 신다 | to wear / put on footwear | Shoes, sneakers, socks, stockings, boots. | 신발/양말을 신다 |
| 쓰다 | to wear / put on the head or face | Hats, caps, helmets, glasses, masks, umbrellas (우산을 쓰다). | 모자/안경/마스크를 쓰다 |

How they differ
1. One “wear”, four verbs. 코트를 입어요 ○ / 신발을 입어요 ✕. 운동화를 신어요 ○. 모자를 써요 ○ / 모자를 입어요 ✕. 반지를 껴요 ○ / 반지를 입어요 ✕. When unsure, ask which body part it goes on.
2. Pants and skirts are 입다. Anything that is clothing uses 입다, even on the lower body: 바지를 입어요 ○ / 바지를 신어요 ✕. 신다 is only for the feet.
3. Glasses: 쓰다 or 끼다. Both 안경을 써요 and 안경을 껴요 are natural. Sunglasses too. Masks are standard with 마스크를 써요.
4. “Wearing” as a state. To describe what someone has on, use -고 있다: 안경을 쓰고 있어요 (is wearing glasses). The past 입었어요 can also describe a current state: 빨간 옷을 입었어요 (she’s in red).
