자주 vs 가끔 vs 종종
often · sometimes · now and then
All three answer “how often?”, but at different levels: 자주 is often, 가끔 is sometimes, and 종종 sits in between, a little more formal.
At a glance
| Word | Core meaning | Nuance | Typical pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| 자주 | often, frequently | The most frequent. The only one used in questions with 얼마나, and it takes 아주 / 너무.
| 가끔 | sometimes, once in a while | Low frequency.
| 종종 | now and then, fairly often | Between the two; slightly more formal, common in writing and news. Rarely intensified with 아주.
How they differ
1. A frequency scale. Think of a line: 자주 (often) > 종종 (now and then) > 가끔 (sometimes). Going somewhere four times a week is 자주; once or twice a year is 가끔.
2. “How often?” uses only 자주. (How often do you come?) ✕. 자주 and 가끔 easily take 아주: 아주 자주 (very often), 아주 가끔 (very rarely); 아주 종종 sounds odd.
3. “Not often” ≠ 가끔 안. “I don’t drink often” is 자주 안 마셔요. 가끔 안 마셔요 means “sometimes I don’t drink”, which is not the same. English speakers often reach for 가끔 here by mistake.
4. 종종 is a bit more formal. 종종 is perfectly fine in speech, but it feels slightly more written and is common in news: 이런 사고가 종종 일어난다 (accidents like this happen now and then). In casual talk, 가끔 and 자주 are far more frequent.
