|---|---|---|---|
| 쉬다 | rest, take a break | Also a day off: 회사를 쉬다 (take a day off work), 가게가 쉬다 (the shop is closed). | 집에서 쉬다 회사를 쉬다 |

How they differ
1. Rest vs fun. Lying on the sofa: 집에서 쉬었어요 (I rested at home). Karaoke with friends: 친구들하고 놀았어요 (I hung out with friends) ○ / 친구들하고 쉬었어요 ✕.
2. English “play” ≠ 놀다. 놀다 is intransitive fun, not playing a specific instrument or sport: 피아노를 쳐요 ○ / 피아노를 놀아요 ✕, 축구를 해요 ○ / 축구를 놀아요 ✕. Games are 게임을 해요.
3. “Day off” and “closed” use 쉬다. Skipping work or school for the day is 회사를 쉬어요, and a business closed for the day is 가게가 쉬어요. Careful: 놀아요 said about a person can also mean they are not working at all — 요즘 놀아요 (I’m between jobs these days).
