-(으)ㄴ/는 데야

when it’s like this, what can one do

Names a situation you cannot argue with and gives up in the face of it. The second clause is almost always a shrug.

    stemending

    When to use it

The form follows the modifier system: verbs take -는 데야, adjectives -(으)ㄴ 데야. Stems in ㄹ drop it. 데 is a noun here and takes a space.

The first clause states something immovable — someone’s insistence, a fact you cannot change. The second concedes defeat: 저렇게까지 우기는 데야 어쩔 수 없지요.

That second clause is normally 어쩔 수 없다, 어쩌겠는가, or a similar surrender. Without it the construction has nothing to lean on.

The tone is resigned rather than angry — you have stopped trying. It is spoken, and slightly old-fashioned.

    In use

    1. 저렇게까지 우기는 데야 어쩔 수 없지요.

When he digs his heels in like that, what can you do?

    2. 본인이 싫다는 데야 강요할 수는 없다.

If he says he doesn’t want to, you can hardly force him.

    3. 비가 이렇게 오는 데야 나갈 도리가 없네요.

With rain like this, there’s no going out.

    4. 다들 반대하는 데야 나 혼자 밀어붙일 수 있나.

With everyone against it, can I push it through alone?

    5. 직접 만드는 데야 뭐라 할 말이 없지요.

If they’re making it themselves, there’s nothing to be said.

    6. 사정이 그런 데야 이해할 수밖에요.

Circumstances being what they are, one can only understand.

    Compared with

    • -(으)ㄴ/는 이상

이상 takes a settled fact and states an obligation; -는 데야 takes one and gives up.

시작한 이상 끝내야 한다. (we must)  /  우기는 데야 어쩔 수 없다. (nothing to be done)

    • -는 수밖에 없다

수밖에 없다 names the one remaining option; -는 데야 sets up the situation that leaves you with none.

기다리는 수밖에 없어요. (only option)  /  우기는 데야 어쩔 수 없지요. (I give up)

    • -는데

Same 데, different construction. -는데 is a single ending setting up background; -는 데야 contains the noun 데 and takes a space.

비가 오는데 나갔어요. (it was raining, and)  /  비가 오는 데야 나갈 수 없지요. (in this rain, no)

    Watch out

    • 저렇게 우기는 데야 저도 우기겠습니다.

저렇게 우기는 데야 어쩔 수 없지요.

The second clause has to concede. A counter-attack contradicts the resignation the ending expresses.

    • 직접 만들는 데야 할 말이 없지요.

직접 만드는 데야 할 말이 없지요.

Stems ending in ㄹ drop it before -는, as everywhere in the modifier system.

    • 비가 오는데야 나갈 수 없지요.

비가 오는 데야 나갈 수 없지요.

데 is a noun and takes a space. Written joined it looks like the unrelated ending -는데.
