When to use it

Attach -는 to a verb stem, then 수밖에 없다. Stems in ㄹ drop it: 만들다 gives 만드는 수밖에 없다. Adjectives do not work here.

The tone is reluctant acceptance. You are not recommending the action; you are reporting that nothing else is available: 지금은 기다리는 수밖에 없어요.

Past is expressed on 없다: 기다리는 수밖에 없었어요. The -는 itself never changes.

Against -아야 하다, the difference is where the pressure comes from. -아야 하다 states a duty; 수밖에 없다 says the alternatives have run out.

1. 지금으로서는 기다리는 수밖에 없어요.

   For now there’s nothing to do but wait.

2. 버스가 끊겨서 걸어가는 수밖에 없었어요.

   The buses had stopped, so I had no choice but to walk.

3. 부품이 없으면 직접 만드는 수밖에 없습니다.

   If the part isn’t available, we’ll just have to make it ourselves.

4. 설명해도 못 알아들으니 포기하는 수밖에 없었다.

   He wouldn’t understand however I explained, so I had to give up.

5. 비가 그치지 않으면 취소하는 수밖에 없겠네요.

   If the rain doesn’t stop, we’ll have no option but to cancel.

6. 결국 사실대로 말하는 수밖에 없었습니다.

   In the end I had no choice but to tell the truth.

Compared with

• -아야 하다

  -아야 하다 states an obligation; 수밖에 없다 says the alternatives are exhausted. The second carries resignation the first does not.

  기다려야 해요. (you must wait)  /  기다리는 수밖에 없어요. (there’s nothing else for it)

• -느니

  -느니 chooses between two bad options; 수밖에 없다 reports that only one remains.

  기다리느니 걷겠어요. (I’d sooner walk)  /  걷는 수밖에 없어요. (walking is all that’s left)

• -(으)ㄹ 따름이다

  Same resignation, different register. 따름이다 is formal and restrained; 수밖에 없다 is everyday and blunt.

  기다릴 따름입니다. (formal)  /  기다리는 수밖에 없어요. (speech)

Watch out

• 부품이 없으면 직접 만들는 수밖에 없습니다.

  부품이 없으면 직접 만드는 수밖에 없습니다.

  Stems ending in ㄹ drop it before -는, as everywhere in the modifier system.

• 요즘은 바쁜 수밖에 없어요.

  요즘은 바쁠 수밖에 없어요.

  With an adjective the form is -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다, meaning “cannot but be.” The -는 form belongs to verbs.

• 버스가 끊겨서 걸어가는 수밖에 없어요. — about last night

  버스가 끊겨서 걸어가는 수밖에 없었어요.

  The tense goes on 없다. The -는 in front never changes.
