When to use it
The form follows the modifier system: verbs take -는 격이다, completed actions -(으)ㄴ 격이다. Stems in ㄹ drop it, and 격 is a noun taking a space.
The clause before it is a figure, not a literal description: 계란으로 바위를 치는 격이다 — it amounts to striking a rock with an egg.

The judgement is nearly always critical — the comparison exposes the action as futile, backwards, or foolish.
