When to use it

Attach -기 to the plain stem and conjugate 시작하다: 한국어를 배우기 시작했어요. No vowel rule, ㄹ stays, and the tense belongs on 시작하다 alone.

Like the other -기 patterns, it accepts only -기. -는 것을 시작하다 is not an alternative.

It attaches to action verbs. For a state beginning to change, Korean routes it through -아/어지다 first: 추워지기 시작했어요 is more natural than 춥기 시작했어요.

If the thing beginning is already a noun, 시작하다 takes it directly: 공부를 시작했어요, 회의를 시작합시다.

   I started learning Korean last year.

2. 갑자기 비가 오기 시작했어요.

   It suddenly started raining.

3. 아이가 걷기 시작했어요.

   The baby has started walking.

4. 요즘 김치를 직접 만들기 시작했어요.

   I’ve started making kimchi myself lately.

5. 십일월부터 추워지기 시작해요.

   It starts getting cold from November.

6. 다음 주부터 운동을 시작할 거예요.

   I’m going to start exercising from next week.

Compared with

• -아/어지다

  -아/어지다 describes a gradual change; adding 기 시작하다 marks the moment it began. The two stack rather than compete.

  추워졌어요. (it’s got cold)  /  추워지기 시작했어요. (it’s started getting cold)

• -게 되다

  -게 되다 reports that a situation came about; -기 시작하다 pinpoints the start of an activity.

  한국어를 배우게 됐어요. (I ended up learning Korean)  /  배우기 시작했어요. (I started learning)

• Noun + 시작하다

  When a noun form exists, using it is shorter and common in writing and announcements.

  공부하기 시작했어요.  /  공부를 시작했어요.

Watch out

• 작년에 한국어를 배웠기 시작했어요.

  작년에 한국어를 배우기 시작했어요.

  -기 never carries tense. The past is expressed once, on 시작하다.

• 한국어를 배우는 것을 시작했어요.

  한국어를 배우기 시작했어요.

  시작하다 in this pattern accepts only -기, like 쉽다, 어렵다, and 전에.

• 십일월부터 춥기 시작해요.

  십일월부터 추워지기 시작해요.

  An adjective describes a state, so it needs -아/어지다 to become a change before 시작하다 can mark its beginning.
