-고 싶어 하다

(someone else) wants to

The third-person form of -고 싶다. Korean will not let you state another person’s inner wishes directly, so it reports their visible wanting instead.

    When to use it

싶다 is an adjective describing a feeling, and Korean treats feelings as accessible only to the person having them. Adding 하다 converts it into a verb of observable behaviour, which is something you can report about others: 동생은 유학을 가고 싶어 해요.

The same conversion runs through the whole language. 좋다 (it is good) becomes 좋아하다 (someone likes it); 슬프다 (sad) becomes 슬퍼하다 (someone shows sadness). Recognising the pattern makes several later grammar points easier.

One consequence of the change: because 싶어 하다 is a verb rather than an adjective, its object must take 을/를. The 이/가 option available with -고 싶다 disappears.

    Compared with

    • -고 싶다

Yours and your listener’s wishes take the plain form; everyone else’s take 싶어 하다. In a question directed at the listener, always use -고 싶다.

뭐 먹고 싶어요? (to you)  /  동생은 뭘 먹고 싶어 해요? (about them)

    • -아/어 하다

The general mechanism behind this form. It turns an adjective of feeling into a verb of behaviour, and the resulting verb takes an object.

      좋다 → 좋아하다  /  슬프다 → 슬퍼하다  /  싶다 → 싶어 하다

    • -(으)ㄴ/는 것 같다

When you are guessing rather than reporting, wrap the sentence in 것 같다. This is the safer choice if you have not actually heard the person say so.

가고 싶어 해요. (I know they do)  /  가고 싶어 하는 것 같아요. (it seems they do)

    Watch out

    • 저는 한국에 가고 싶어 해요.

      저는 한국에 가고 싶어요.

싶어 하다 describes wanting observed from outside. Applied to yourself it sounds as though you are watching a stranger.

    • 동생은 물이 마시고 싶어 해요.

      동생은 물을 마시고 싶어 해요.

싶어 하다 is a verb, so its object takes 을/를. The 이/가 option only exists with the adjective form -고 싶다.

    • 친구는 예쁘고 싶어 해요.

      친구는 예뻐지고 싶어 해요.

Only action verbs take this ending. Turn the adjective into a change of state with -아/어지다 first.
