-기 전에
before doing
Places one action before another. The stem never changes and never takes tense — which makes it easier than its partner -(으)ㄴ 후에, and a good place to start.

When to use it
Attach -기 전에 to any plain stem: 자기 전에 이를 닦아요. There is no vowel rule, no consonant rule, and ㄹ stays put.
Two things stay fixed no matter what. The form is always -기, never -는 or -(으)ㄴ. And it never carries tense: whether the sentence is past or future, the first clause stays 자기 전에, and the final verb does the work.
With a noun, drop the -기 and use 전에 directly: 식사 전에, 수업 전에. The same word also measures time backwards from now — 삼 년 전에 means three years ago.
How to attach it
| Situation | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Any verb | -기 전에 | 자다 → 자기 전에 |
| ㄹ stems keep the ㄹ | -기 전에 | 만들다 → 만들기 전에 |
| Never takes tense | plain stem only | 갔기 전에 does not exist |
| With a noun | noun + 전에 | 식사 전에 |
| Time ago | amount + 전에 | 삼 년 전에 |
| Opposite | -(으)ㄴ 후에 | 먹은 후에 |

Compared with
-(으)ㄴ 후에
The pair is not symmetrical. “Before” uses -기; “after” uses the past modifier -(으)ㄴ. Learners often try to use -기 for both.
먹기 전에 / 먹은 후에
-(으)ㄹ 때
-기 전에 orders two events; -(으)ㄹ 때 names the moment something happens. They can appear in the same sentence without conflict.
나가기 전에 (before leaving) / 나갈 때 (when leaving)
Noun + 전에
When the action already has a noun form, using it is shorter and more natural in writing. 식사 전에 beats 식사하기 전에 on a prescription label.
식사하기 전에 (spoken) / 식사 전에 (written, concise)
Watch out
자는 전에 이를 닦아요.
자기 전에 이를 닦아요.
This construction only takes -기. The modifier forms -는 and -(으)ㄴ belong with other nouns, not with 전에.
한국에 왔기 전에 공부했어요.
한국에 오기 전에 공부했어요.
Tense never appears before 전에. The past is carried by the final verb, 공부했어요.
식사기 전에 약을 드세요.
식사 전에 약을 드세요.
-기 turns a verb into a noun. 식사 is already a noun, so it takes 전에 directly.
