-(으)ㄴ/는 판에

at a juncture like this

Names a pressing situation and then points out something that does not belong in it. 판 means the scene or the state of play — usually a bad one.

Build it

Pick a form

    바쁘+-(으)ㄴ/는 판에

    stemending

    When to use it

The form follows the modifier system: verbs take -는 판에, adjectives -(으)ㄴ 판에. Stems in ㄹ drop it, and 판 is a noun taking a space.

The situation must be urgent or dire — there is no time, no money, nothing to spare: 먹고살기도 힘든 판에 무슨 여행이냐.

The second clause names something out of place given that, and it very often takes the form of a rhetorical question or a rebuke.

The register is spoken and blunt. It sits close to -(으)ㄹ 마당에, which is more formal and less agitated.

    In use

    1. 먹고살기도 힘든 판에 무슨 여행이냐.

The place was on fire and there he was packing his things.

    4. 시간이 없는 판에 처음부터 다시 하자고요?

There’s no time, and you want to start over?

    5. 부품도 못 구하는 판에 직접 만들겠다니 무리다.

We can’t even get the parts, and he talks of making them himself.

    6. 다들 밤새우는 판에 혼자 먼저 갈 수는 없지요.

Everyone else is up all night; I can hardly leave first.

    Compared with

    • -(으)ㄹ 마당에

Very close. 마당에 is formal and describes a decisive juncture; 판에 is spoken and agitated, and implies the situation is bad.

떠날 마당에 무슨 말이 필요한가. (formal)  /  바쁜 판에 무슨 여행이냐. (spoken)

    • -(으)ㄴ/는 데야

데야 gives up in the face of a situation; 판에 objects to something that does not fit it.

우기는 데야 어쩔 수 없지. (I give up)  /  바쁜 판에 무슨 여행이냐. (that’s out of place)

    • -(으)ㄴ/는 이상

이상 takes a settled fact and states an obligation; 판에 takes a bad situation and rejects a proposal.

시작한 이상 끝내야 한다. (we must finish)  /  시간이 없는 판에 다시 하자고? (out of the question)

    Watch out

    • 여유로운 판에 여행을 가기로 했다.

      여유로운 김에 여행을 가기로 했다.

판에 requires a pressing or dire situation. A comfortable one gives it nothing to object to.

    • 부품도 못 구하는 판에 직접 만들는다니 무리다.

부품도 못 구하는 판에 직접 만들겠다니 무리다.

Stems ending in ㄹ drop it before -는, and the intention here takes -겠다니.

    • 시간이 없는판에 다시 하자고요?

      시간이 없는 판에 다시 하자고요?

판 is a noun and takes a space after the modifier.
