좀 vs 조금 vs 약간
a bit; please (softener) · a little, a few · slightly
좀 began as a short form of 조금, but it now does a job of its own: softening requests, like “please” or “could you”. 약간 only means “slightly” and is used for degree.
At a glance
| Word | Core meaning | Nuance | Typical pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| 좀 | a bit; softener in requests | Spoken, very frequent. 물 좀 주세요 = “Some water, please.” | 좀 도와주세요 물 좀 주세요 |
| 조금 | a little (amount, time, degree) | The neutral word. 조금만 (just a little), 조금 전에 (a little while ago). | 조금 기다리다 조금만 |
| 약간 | slightly, somewhat | Degree of a state: 약간 짜다, 약간 피곤하다. Not for requests or 만. | 약간 짜다 약간 피곤하다 |
How they differ
1. 좀 softens requests. In 물 좀 주세요, 좀 doesn’t mean “a little water” — it just makes the request polite, like “please”. 펜 좀 빌려 주세요 ○ / 펜 약간 빌려 주세요 ✕. 조금 in the same spot sounds like you really want only a small amount.
2. 조금 for amounts and 조금만. 조금 is the full, neutral “a little”: 한국어를 조금 해요 (I speak a little Korean). Set patterns take 조금: 조금도 몰라요 ○ / 좀도 몰라요 ✕ (I don’t know it at all), 조금밖에 없어요 (there’s only a little). In speech, 조금만 often shortens to 좀만, but 약간만 is unnatural.
3. 약간 for “slightly”. 약간 describes the degree of a state or quality: 약간 짜요 (slightly salty), 약간 피곤해요 (a bit tired). With these, 좀 and 조금 also work — 좀 짜요 ○ / 조금 짜요 ○ — so the choice is mostly style. Unlike 좀, 약간 can modify a noun with 의: 약간의 차이 (a slight difference).
